  Children’s Orthopaedic physicians understand the demands that sports place on young athletes and the importance of age-appropriate care. Our specialized physicians blend their skills in sports medicine and their unique knowledge of pediatric growth and development to provide comprehensive care for the young athlete who has sustained an injury. AllSports Medicine Program AllSports Medicine is a multidisciplinary program at All Children's Hospital dedicated to advancing the treatment, education, research and prevention of sports injuries in children, adolescents and young adults in the Tampa Bay area. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Drew Warnick; Director of Physical Therapy Services Maggie Reilly; and Coach, Parent, and former NFL player Mike Alstott describe what the program has to offer for up-and-coming athletes, their families, and their coaches and trainers. Experience and Expertise Our sports physicians are fellowship-trained in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine. This training emphasizes focused expertise to maximize recovery in young athletes who sustain injuries. Our sports physicians are experts in cutting edge techniques in sports surgery for children, adolescents, and young adults. They are trained in arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques of the hip, knee, ankle, shoulder, and elbow. They also have extensive experience in the treatment of all fractures sustained during athletic activity. Pediatric and Adolescent Sports Medicine Program Drew E. Warnick, M.D. is the surgical director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Sports Medicine program at All Children’s Hospital. This program was developed to meet the special needs of children and teens with sports injuries. This comprehensive center for pediatric and adolescent sports medicine is the only sports medicine program in the Tampa Bay area focused solely on the care of young athletes.   Children's Orthopaedic and Scoliosis Surgery Associates, LLP’s skilled, board–certified physicians provide the latest and most advanced treatment options for patients with spinal conditions such as idiopathic scoliosis and Kyphosis. Our physicians evaluate each patient carefully to determine the correct course of treatment for both surgical and non-surgical cases. With two fellowship–trained spine specialists, Children’s Orthopaedics utilizes the most advanced technology available, including minimally invasive surgical techniques and computerized, intraoperative navigation. Experience and Expertise Dr. Neustadt and Dr. Hahn have performed over 1,400 scoliosis surgical procedures to date, with over 100 children and adolescents treated annually in recent years. Combined, they have over 30 years experience performing scoliosis surgery. Cutting Edge Technology - Stryker Navigation System CT-based, intra-operative image guidance allows the surgeon to navigate the spine using “smart tools.” The data from a preoperatively acquired CT scan of the spine is merged with in vivo registration of anatomical reference points that have been determined from the 3D axial and sagittal CT images. Use of this technology has facilitated rapid and accurate placement of pedicle screws for which there is virtually no tolerance for inaccurate placement. This technology also enables more precise sizing of the screws within the pedicles and the vertebral body, lessening the chances of loosening. The goal of such monitoring is to identify changes in brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerve function prior to irreversible changes occurring. Motor and sensory monitoring of the spinal cord is conducted with every scoliosis case our surgeons perform in order to complete the case safely and expeditiously. The Spine Team Our operating room has been specially-outfitted with advanced imaging technology and specialized instrumentation to accommodate all of our orthopaedic surgical procedures. The orthopaedic support team consists of knowledgeable professionals who participate in each step of the procedure. This team consists of orthopaedically-trained pediatric nurses and patient care technicians, neuro-technologists, fellowship-trained Pediatric Radiologists and Pediatric Anesthesiologists. What is Scoliosis and Kyphosis? ScoliosisScoliosis is defined as a side-to-side curvature of the spine. Although it is a complex three-dimensional deformity, on an X-ray, viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with scoliosis may look more like an "S" or a "C" than a straight line. Scoliosis is typically classified as congenital, idiopathic, syndromic, or neuromuscular. This condition affects approximately 7 million people in the United States.KyphosisKyphosis is an abnormal increase in thoracic roundback. When viewed from the side, it may appear as if the person is slouching or has a “hump” on the back. Symptoms Scoliosis is usually painless, while severe kyphosis is commonly associated with pain. A parent or doctor may suspect scoliosis if one shoulder appears to be higher than the other or the pelvis appears to be tilted. Untrained observers often do not notice the curving in the earlier stages. Children’s modesty causes them not to undress in front of their parents. When they are in a bathing suit, one may notice a sideways curvature of the spine or an elevation of one shoulder or hip. Kyphosis is much easier to detect with the first parental complaint often being that their child “won’t stand up straight.”

  Fracture and Trauma

  Children’s Orthopaedics’ skilled, board–eligible and board–certified physicians provide the latest and most accurate treatment options for children and adolescents, for both surgical and non-surgical cases. Because children are still growing, care has to be taken in treatment to assure the best possible outcomes in regards to long-term health and bone growth. Fracture Treatment A child’s bones have special centers where growth occurs called growth plates. These areas are weaker than solid bone and are frequently injured during athletic activity. If your child is not treated correctly, your child’s bone may not grow normally. Pediatric orthopaedic surgeons have the specialty training to recognize and treat fractures unique to children. A child with a suspected fracture should see a pediatric orthopaedist as quickly as possible. Ideally, this means seeing a pediatric orthopaedic specialist within 5 to 7 days of the injury, especially if manipulation is required to align the bone. AquaCast We not only offer casts in several different colors, but we offer casts that can get WET! AquaCast is a waterproof, breathable, washable cast padding that is used in place of cotton and stockinette underneath fiberglass or synthetic casting tape. This accommodates moisture and wetness from perspiration, bathing, or swimming - unlike standard padding that is absorbent. Because of the fast drying characteristics of our AquaCast waterproof casting, your child will have less skin breakdown from retained moisture, resulting in fewer unscheduled cast changes. These benefits allow your child to bathe and swim in the pool while healing. Because children are still growing, care has to be taken in treatment to assure the best possible outcomes in regards to longterm health and bone growth. Congenital anomalies are often referred to as defects that are present at birth. They may or may not be genetic.
